How Groundwater Sustainability Works Together
Groundwater sustainability in the South American Subbasin is achieved through coordination between statewide policy, local agencies, and basin-wide implementation.
Under California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), local agencies work together to monitor groundwater conditions, implement projects, and ensure long-term sustainability for communities, agriculture, and the environment.

The Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP)
The collaboration between SGMA, GSAs, and SCGA comes together in the
Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP). This plan acts as
the basin’s roadmap for managing groundwater over the next several decades.
The GSP defines sustainability goals, monitoring networks, and projects
designed to protect groundwater supplies for communities, agriculture,
businesses, and ecosystems throughout the basin.
